Patching

There are many different methods of patching asphalt and situations that they relate to.

1. Surface or Skin patching:

The asphalt is prepared by sweeping, followed by the application of liquid asphalt tack for adhesion. Then asphalt is installed and striped.

  • Application: To fill low ponding areas or as a temporary repair of damage areas.

2. Fill Patching:

Loose debris is swept from holes in asphalt, liquid asphalt tack is then applied to the edges of the holes.

The holes are then filled with asphalt mix and compacted.

  • Application: Patching of potholes in asphalt where the surrounding asphalt is sound and free of cracking.

3. Remove and Replace patching:

Damaged asphalt areas are cut out leaving a square recess in the asphalt surface. The base material is
then re-compacted and liquid asphalt tack is applied to the edges of the patch area. Asphalt is then installed and compacted flush with surrounding surfaces.

  • Areas where the asphalt is badly cracked or broken up needs to be patched in this manner.

4. Excavation Patching:

Remove deteriorated asphalt, if base material beneath and sub-grade is bad, the unsuitable material will need to be removed. New aggregate base material is installed and compacted. Liquid asphalt tack is applied to the edges of the patch for adhesion and asphalt mix is installed and compacted.

  • Application: Severely broken asphalt areas where sub-grade soils have contaminated the aggregate base material
